Twittering in Education

For one of my MLS assignments, I  have the opportunity to follow several of the biggest names in the educational technology field. The top six leaders are Linda Braun, Tony Vincent, Buffy Hamilton, The Daring Librarian, Jim Lerman, and Kathy Schrock. Each of their profiles and tweets are valuable and informative.

Linda Braun ( @lbraun2000) is a Youth Service Manager in a Seattle Public Library, an Educational Tech Consultant, an educator, a teen advocate, a librarian, and one of YALSA's Past Presidents. One of my favorite tweets from her is about popular apps teens love. I have a tween who is always on her Iphone so this one picque my curiosity. It is titled Apps Teens Actually Love.

Here are the apps teens actually love, in 5 charts http://t.co/2u0v7cnqgt

This chart is very useful, not only for my personal children, but also for my students. It gives me insight on what's hot in teen apps.

The next educational leader in twitter world is Tony Vincent (@tonyvincent). He co-created an iPad app called Stick Around. This app lets you "play, design, and share sorting and labeling puzzles! Stick Around comes with an assortment of puzzles, including ordering decimals and classifying rocks. It's the player's job to drag the stickers from the tray to their correct spots on the background before time runs out."  His tweets centers around learning new technology and apps. One of my favorites from him is the tweet where he explains how his Ipad app works:

When you click on the link, it takes you directly to the page where you see the video of  him teaching you how to use his app in the classroom.

The third person I began to follow is Buffy Hamilton (@buffyjhamilton). Her profile states she is a "librarian and teacher who loves learning, critical literacy, stories, music, dogs, poetry, and participatory learning." Her tweet on 3-d printing reminds me of a research  paper  my son did when he was a senior in high school, three years ago! From the looks of the video and tweet, a lot of progress has been made since then.

The next technology twitterer is The Daring Librarian ( @Gwyneth Jones). She is a "teacher, a librarian, a blogger, a speaker, a meme archivist, and creator & curator of content."
Her tweet about becoming a tech guru this summer caught my eye, especially since I am taking the course, Internet For School Librarians. This tweet will bring you to Edutech for an article giving you tips and places to get tech savvy for the following school year. Because of the Daring Librarian, I signed up for Thinglink.

Jim Lerman is the 5th leader.(@jimlerman).  He is a "parent, learner, teacher, leader, author, speaker, collaborator, networker, focused on new schools for new learning." He often tweets about his page titled, The 4th Era. It introduced me to Scoop It. This is a neat tool to get up to date information, articles, and content on the subject area of your choice. The articles are short and easy to read. I enjoyed reading The 4th Era.  Boosting the Life Chances of Young Men of Color was a really good read because I teach African American children and my son is of color.

My last one is Katy Schrock (@kathyschrock). She is  an educational technologist, a  DEN Guru, an Adobe Ed Leader, and a Google Certified Teacher.  After scrolling through some of her tweets, I came across the motherload of all tweets. It's a link to her website where she has a trove of Web 2.0 tools and online utilities one can access with a click of a mouse. This page will be favorited and put upon my tool menu bar. Thanks Katy Schrock!
